Welcome my friends, I've been in the commercial roofing business for approximately 30 years now after the purchase of my RV seeing the installation practices that have been used today totally blows me away.

I have chosen to take the time putting together a couple videos on flat roof repairing or replacement of your RV roofs. (They Should Have The Same Installation Process).

Today the RV roof manufacturers and repair shops have mastered sucking homeowners in all across the United states on roof replacements when in fact most cases they only needed a repair. Just because you may have a hole or a tear in the roof does not justify or require a full replacement. In most cases a RV roof does not need to be replaced for at least 15 years unless it is totally neglected and then that is questionable.

It is my plan to help and encourage you all to tackle replacing or repairing your own roof as needed. Everyone has the ability to make their RV roof virtually maintenance free and “ NO MORE RV CAULKING NEEDED” when done correctly. Prepare the next set of videos for you please feel free to post questions photos and we'll do our best to get back to you in a timely manner and answer any questions you may have.

Issues like roof leaks, water damage, faulty plumbing, and compromised electrical systems can turn an exciting RV experience into a nightmare. By following these inspection steps, you can ensure your RV remains durable for years to come. Checking water lines, corners for moisture, slide-out alignments, and propane connections can prevent hidden problems from escalating into expensive repairs. We also introduce essential tools, such as a moisture meter, to detect potential water damage before it becomes a major issue. Beyond interior inspections, exterior evaluations are just as vital. Conducting a thorough roof inspection, checking self-leveling jacks, and examining the suspension system ensures your RV is structurally sound. Testing propane lines, water pumps, refrigerators, and electrical outlets guarantees everything functions properly before hitting the road. This video walks you through real-life RV issues I have had, offering DIY solutions and expert tips to prevent financial loss.
Flat roof repairs involve some unique considerations due to the nature of their structure. Flat roofs should be built with a slight slope to allow water drainage, but they’re still more prone to issues like water pooling, leaks, and cracking compared to pitched roofs. Here’s an overview of the basic elements of flat roof repair:

1. Identifying the Damage

Pooling Water: Water pools on flat roofs due to improper drainage or dips in the surface. If left too long, it can damage the roof material.

Leaks and Punctures: Flat roofs are often covered with materials like rubber (EPDM), modified bitumen, or asphalt; these can develop cracks or punctures over time.

Blistering and Bubbling: Moisture trapped in the roofing materials or under the top layer can cause bubbles or blisters on the surface, which can worsen if ignored.

Membrane Damage: Many flat roofs have a membrane to provide waterproofing. This membrane can degrade or tear, compromising the roof's integrity.

2. Common Repair Materials

Liquid Roof Coatings: Elastomeric or acrylic coatings can be applied as a waterproof layer, often as a quick solution to extend the roof's life. Silicone coatings are also used for UV resistance and durability.

Roofing Cement and Patching Kits: Small leaks and cracks can often be patched using roofing cement or special patching kits made for flat roofs.

Modified Bitumen and EPDM Patches: For more durable repairs, roofing felt or EPDM patches can be cut to cover damaged areas. These patches require adhesive and often need a primer to ensure proper bonding.

Flashings and Reinforcements: Adding or repairing flashings around roof edges, vents, and drains can help prevent water intrusion.

3. Basic Repair Steps

Clean the Surface: Clear dirt, debris, and standing water from the damaged area. Cleaning ensures the repair material bonds well to the roof surface.

Inspect and Prepare: Assess the damage thoroughly and cut away any loose or damaged material, such as cracked felt or old patches.

Apply Patch or Coating: Use the appropriate patching material, applying it in layers as needed, and press it down to adhere properly. If using liquid coatings, apply them evenly over the damaged area.

Seal and Test: After applying the patch or coating, let it cure, and then test it for waterproofing, especially in rainy weather. If you see pooling water or leaks, further repairs may be necessary.

4. Preventive Maintenance Tips

Inspect Regularly: Regular inspection, ideally twice a year, can help you catch potential issues early.

Keep Drains Clear: Ensuring drains are free of debris helps prevent water accumulation.

Apply Sealant and Coatings: Protective coatings can extend a roof’s life and reduce the frequency of repairs.

Limit Foot Traffic: Flat roofs often double as workspaces, but limiting foot traffic reduces wear and tear on the surface.

5. Hiring a Professional vs. DIY

For minor cracks and leaks, DIY repairs are feasible with the right materials and care. However, extensive damage, multiple leaks, or roofing membrane repairs may be better handled by professionals, as improper repairs can lead to further issues and potentially void warranties on some materials.

Starting with these basics will give you a foundation to handle common flat roof issues and perform preventative maintenance to extend the life of your roof.
